Clarence Park Sensory Garden

Following an initial consultation by St. Albans District Council at Clarence Park, Groundwork was invited to identify a project that met the requests of the local Asian community, local children, and also provided improved access.

Groundwork worked with a District Council, three local schools, the Asian Family Health Group and St. Albans District Access Group to create a stunning sensory garden in an underused section of the park.

Groundwork education officers worked with pupils from Fleetville Junior School, St. Stephens Junior School and Watling View School to explore the senses and how different plants could affect and stimulate them. Plants incorporated in the design for the sensory garden were chosen for their texture, scent and the sound they make in the wind, as well as their visual appearance. A variety of natural materials were chosen for their feel.  Many of the selected plants will also attract wildlife to the garden such as bees and butterflies. A planting day held in early summer saw local people, pupils from their local schools and the Mayor, add the finishing touches to the planting at the garden.

The completed garden was recognised within the year's East of England Regional Council Equalities Award scheme.
